What TOEFL score do I need?

The institution you apply to sets the TOEFL score you need; ETS and the TOEFL Program set no passing or failing scores. Some institutions still list 0 to 120 requirements, but for two years your score report shows both 1 to 6 scores and a comparable 0 to 120 total, so compare that total with the requirement.

Check requirements with each institution

ETS describes a good score as the one that meets the English requirements of the institutions you are applying to, and recommends confirming requirements with them directly. Institutions are updating their requirements to the 1 to 6 scale at different times.

If an institution lists only 0 to 120

Compare the comparable 0 to 120 total on your score report with the institution's requirement. ETS says there is nothing you need to calculate or convert. This comparable total appears on score reports for two years after January 2026.

Score validity and MyBest

TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from the test date, and ETS does not send scores after two years. Whether MyBest scores are accepted also depends on the institution, so check that too.

Put the ETS "Understanding TOEFL Scores" page next to the notice from each institution you are applying to, and check whether the institution lists its requirement as a 1 to 6 band or a 0 to 120 total.
